AARP: New AARP New Jersey Report Finds Voters Over 50

by Gotham Polling

New Brunswick, NJ (April 9, 2025) – The 50 plus age group remains the most reliable and influential voting bloc in New Jersey, a new AARP New Jersey report found.

“The Power of the Older Voter” was prepared in collaboration with Gotham Polling and Analytics and highlights the significant influence of the 50-plus demographic in shaping electoral outcomes, particularly in non-presidential election years. Their turnout rates in non-presidential elections far exceed those of younger age groups, regardless of party affiliation. This trend underscores the critical role older voters play in determining key races at the state and local levels in 2025.

AARP New Jersey is proud to highlight the critical role that older voters continue to play in our democracy. Their consistent and substantial turnout in elections, especially at the local and state levels, demonstrates their commitment to shaping the future of our communities,” said AARP New Jersey State Director Chris Widelo. “We hope this report encourages policymakers and candidates to address the issues that matter most to older voters, including property tax relief, retirement security, long-term care reform, and support for family caregivers.

In presidential elections, voter turnout in the Garden State is widespread across all age groups. However, in non-presidential years, voters aged 50 and over — both Democrats and Republicans — dominate the electorate, often by a substantial margin. The report reveals that in every county reviewed, voters aged 50 and over represent the majority of turnout, with some counties, such as Hunterdon and Morris, seeing turnout rates exceeding 70% in off-year elections. This demographic’s strong presence underscores their outsized influence, particularly in local and state elections.

Additionally, the report finds that registered women aged 50 and over surpass their male counterparts, regardless of party affiliation. This highlights the pivotal role of older women in the electoral process.
